Day one of the Titanic reunion dawned sunny, but cool, at the Fairview Lawn Cemetery. With temperatures in the thirties, Cope was glad he’d brought his heavy winter overcoat. Thankfully, Jude and Ronan wore theirs as well.

Cope stood at the back of the group of mourners as a bagpiper played a stirring rendition of Amazing Grace. He was struggling to hold back his tears. None of the Titanic victims were friends or family, but the haunting melody never failed to bring his emotions to the surface.

He’d never been much of a churchgoer, but was especially moved by the service. Cope noticed Jude and Ronan were as well. As the vicar spoke, Cope kept his eyes open for spirits. Unfortunately, none appeared, aside from the usual assortment of parents and grandparents keeping watch over their families.

When the service wrapped up, Jude stayed behind. He wandered back to the grave of Sidney Leslie Goodwin and knelt silently. Cope hadn’t been the only one affected by the death of the little boy who was so close in age to Wolf.

“Are you okay?” Cope asked, when Jude made his way back to them. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a yellow cab lurking a few rows back from the Titanic graves.

“I’m good. Just wanted to pay my respects one last time.” Jude offered a watery smile.

“I don’t want to alarm anyone, but there’s a cab heading our way. It’s been hanging around the cemetery since the service started.” Cope wasn’t able to get a sense for who was in the car. He assumed it was a latecomer to the service who hadn’t wanted to interrupt the ceremony.

Ronan and Jude spun around to see the car slowly making its way toward them. Ronan’s right hand slid to his hip, presumably for his gun, which had been left at home.

The car pulled up in front of them and out popped a familiar face. “Hey, guys! Thought I’d come visit and get oot and aboot.” Kevin Fitzgibbon laughed at his own joke.

Ronan fist-bumped Fitzgibbon. “What the hell are you doing here, Cap?”

Kevin took a large step to his left. “Don’t want to get accidentally struck by lightning because Ronan’s swearing in a cemetery.” Kevin’s trademark grin was back in place. “A little birdie told me you could use a little help with this case, so I packed a bag, kissed my baby, and here I am.”

“A little birdie? You mean Tennyson?” Ronan lifted a casual eyebrow.

“No, dipshit, I meant Woody Woodpecker.” Kevin rolled his eyes. “Of course I meant Tennyson.”

“I don’t much care for your attitude, but I’m happy you’re here.” Ronan looked relieved to have backup.

“Me too,” Jude agreed. “Walk to the car with me and I’ll fill you in on everything that’s happened since we got here.”

“Thanks, Kevin.” Cope called out. “He’s one hell of a guy.”

“He really is,” Ronan agreed. “Did I ever tell you the story about him agreeing to let Tennyson work with me?”

Cope found his first smile of the day.
